On the 16th November I shared a wonderful afternoon with the Sugar Plum Fairy, some delighted children and the story of The Nutcracker.
Storytelling is such an important aspect of human interaction. It is how we communicate, share traditions, pass on culture and express ourselves. The stories we read, or see or hear, provide us with lessons in adventure, love, forgiveness and so much more. It is why I love the performing arts. It gives us another avenue to interact through storytelling and share great stories.
The Nutcracker is one of those great stories, full of daring fights, magical adventures, sweet dreams and of course beautiful ballerinas. It has everything kids love. I believe it is important to introduce these stories at a young age and allow them to learn the story, hear the music and be involved in the experience.
We were lucky enough that Anna from Anna’s Shop Around the Corner in Cronulla opened her door (and her kitchen) for our event. While we waited for all the children to arrive, we had Nutcracker character colouring sheets to complete and to set the scene.
We gathered around the big comfy chairs in Anna’s window to read the story and hear the music from the Nutcracker. As we came near the end of the story our beautiful Sugar Plum Fairy gracefully walked behind the girls and performed the dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.
The delight in the children’s faces when The Sugar Plum Fairy waltzed out was all worth it. I wish I had captured their faces. It was only appropriate that the girls jumped up and danced with The Sugar Plum Fairy.
Look at this sweet snippet of the event.
Anna served the sweetest high tea for the children to enjoy, those mini cupcakes were heaven, I may have been a massive child and had two or three… Our Sugar Plum Fairy stayed to have sweet treats with the children, take photos, answer questions and let them touch and feel her tutu and pointe shoes. To top the afternoon off, Anna delivered sweetly decorated milkshakes to send the children in to a sugar rush and a final dance with our Sugar Plum Fairy (thank goodness for the park right outside to run off that sugar).
It was a speactacular afternoon and one that I hope the kids remember for a long time to come. Check out all the wonderful images in the slider below!
